In Memory of Dan Henkel
By Jerry Pagac
IPA lost a dear friend, colleague and board member with the untimely passing of Dan Henkel.
Dan was always ready to take on new responsibilities dedicated to our mission. The ultimate volunteer, he handled all aspects of communications and public relations for IPA Whether it was manning our booth at the State Fair or Earth Day celebrations, Dan was our “go to” person who planned, coordinated and hosted our annual zoom meeting for members.
He had a unique gift to engage with people. His quick smile and friendly demeanor captivated kids and adults as well.
The attached photo of Dan helping a little girl making a personal Earth Day IPA button says it all. We, of course knew him best as the former DNR Director of Public Information and editor of Outdoor Indiana Magazine. But Dan’s life had many facets. Some of us knew him as a classical guitarist performing professionally. He founded the Renaissance Studio in Broad Ripple in the 1970s teaching guitar and music theory. After earning his BA with High Distinction from IUPUI, Dan launched his career in Communications and Public Relations.
We were not the only beneficiary of Dan’s talents. He served on several non-profit organization boards including the Public Relations Society of America, the IUPUI School of Liberal Arts Alumni Board, Indianapolis Children’s Choir and of course, our own IPA
We will always remember Dan for his quick wit, punditry and genuine warmth.
